Man Powered Flight

Wacky Steampunk Airship

The highlight of the festival is a man-powered flight contest for anyone with ambitions to defy the law of gravity.

Competitors are required to form a team, build flying machines on a theme of their choice to see who can travel the furthest. Prizes will be awarded for distance and originality. The more outrageous and ingenious the flying machines the better, though distance would obviously be the determining factor.

Teams will be judged on three criteria: distance, creativity and showmanship and what constitutes a flying machine is down to the imagination of those taking part. However, they must be entirely human-powered, self-constructed, colourful, made of environmentally-friendly materials and able to float so they and the pilots can be quickly retrieved by our crews in and on the water.

A team can comprise up to five members; one pilot and four ground crew to act as pushers but only the pilot may be in the craft at time of launch and must be 18 years old or above. Those younger may still participate as a ground crew member.

While jumping off a pier into the harbour is normally frowned upon, the man-powered flight competitions are integral to maritime festivals and water carnivals. Every precaution will be taken and the tightest safety procedures will be implemented as instructed by the Island’s health and safety authority.
